Key identification features

  • Females have a strongly elongated, eel-like, scaleless body that is uniformly jet-black
  • Long, thin barbel hanging from the chin, tipped with a small luminous organ used to lure prey
  • Small, fine teeth lining the jaws, angled for gripping small prey
  • No pelvic fins at all, unlike most other dragonfishes
  • Rows of small photophores running along the belly and lower flanks
  • Females reach up to about 40 cm, while males are tiny (around 5 cm), lack the barbel and functional teeth, and are brownish rather than black

Common look-alikes

  • Other dragonfishes (Stomias, Tactostoma): share an elongated black body and chin barbel, but differ in barbel length, branching, and retain pelvic fins that the blackdragon lacks.
  • Atlantic relative Idiacanthus fasciola: nearly identical in shape, separated mainly by geographic range (Atlantic versus Pacific) and minor photophore count differences.
  • Viperfish: also elongated and dark, but have prominent oversized fangs and lack a chin barbel entirely.

Where you'll see one

The Pacific blackdragon lives in the North Pacific Ocean, ranging through the mesopelagic to bathypelagic zone and migrating vertically each day, typically between about 200 and 1,000 meters at night and deeper during daylight.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell a female Pacific blackdragon from a male?

Females are far larger, black, and carry a luminous chin barbel and functional teeth, while males are tiny, brownish, and lack both the barbel and functioning jaws.

What separates the Pacific blackdragon from other dragonfishes with chin barbels?

Check for pelvic fins: the Pacific blackdragon has none at all, while most other similar dragonfish species retain a pair of pelvic fins.
