Electric Yellow Cichlid

Labidochromis caeruleus

Type: freshwater, benthopelagic

Electric Yellow Cichlid

Physical Characteristics

An elongated, laterally compressed body with a vibrant electric yellow coloration. It features a prominent black horizontal stripe along the dorsal fin, which is more pronounced in males. The anal and pelvic fins also contain black margins.

Habitat & Distribution

Endemic to Lake Malawi in Africa, specifically found in the rocky shoreline areas (mbuna habitats) along the central western coast. It prefers deep water up to 40 meters.

Size & Weight

Typically reaches 7.5 to 10 centimeters (3-4 inches) in length, though some individuals in optimal conditions may reach 15 centimeters.

Similar Looking Species

May be confused with other yellow mbuna cichlids like Metriaclima lombardoi (Juveniles/Females), but the distinct black-edged dorsal fin is a primary identifier for Labidochromis caeruleus.

Ecological Role

Acts as a secondary consumer within the rocky lake ecosystem, feeding on invertebrates and controlling small organism populations.

Diet

Omnivorous; it feeds primarily on lithophilous (rock-dwelling) invertebrates, small crustaceans, and insects, while occasionally grazing on algae/periphyton.

Behavior

Unlike many mbuna, it is relatively peaceful. It remains mostly solitary or in small groups and is diurnal, being active during the day among rocky crevices.

Reproduction

Maternal mouthbrooder; the female carries fertilized eggs and fry in her mouth for approximately 3 weeks for protection until they are free-swimming.

Conservation Status

Least Concern (IUCN), though localized populations may face pressure from the aquarium trade and habitat degradation.

Identification Tips

Look for the bright yellow body paired with a bold black band running through the length of the dorsal fin. Pectoral fins are usually transparent.

Interesting Facts

In the wild, there are actually white and blue variants of this species; the electric yellow morph became the most famous due to its popularity in the aquarium hobby.
