Physical Characteristics
Features a striking pattern of horizontal black and white stripes on its body. The fins, including the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, are bright yellow with black spots. They have thick, fleshy lips and an oblong body shape typical of the Haemulidae family.
Habitat & Distribution
Inhabits coral-rich areas of lagoons and seaward reefs at depths of 2 to 25 meters. Distributed across the Indo-West Pacific, from East Africa to the Tuamotu Islands and north to the Ryukyu Islands.
Size & Weight
Commonly grows to a length of 45-50 cm (18-20 inches), with a maximum recorded length of approximately 72 cm (28 inches).
Similar Looking Species
Plectorhinchus lineatus (Yellowbanded Sweetlips) which has more numerous, thinner stripes that are often diagonal; and Plectorhinchus lessonii which has fewer horizontal stripes and different fin spotting patterns.
Ecological Role
A nocturnal carnivore that feeds on benthic invertebrates like crustaceans and mollusks during the night, while resting in schools near reef structures during the day. Listed as 'Least Concern' on the IUCN Red List.
