Oriental Sweetlips
Plectorhinchus vittatus
Type: saltwater, reef fish

Physical Characteristics
Features a striking pattern of horizontal black and white stripes on the upper body that transition into spots on the fins and lower body as it matures. The fins are bright yellow with black spots. They have thick, fleshy lips and a robust, deep-bodied shape typical of grunt family members.
Habitat & Distribution
Inhabits coral-rich areas, lagoons, and seaward reefs at depths ranging from 2 to 25 meters. Distributed throughout the Indo-West Pacific, from the Maldives to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia.
Size & Weight
Standard adult length is approximately 45-50 cm, with a maximum recorded length of 72 cm. Weight varies by age but they are considered medium-sized reef fish.
Similar Looking Species
Ribboned Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus polytaenia) which has more numerous, finer yellow and white horizontal stripes, or the Harlequin Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides) in its sub-adult phase.
Ecological Role
Primary nocturnal carnivore that feeds on small crustaceans, mollusks, and worms found in the sand. Juveniles mimic the swimming patterns of toxic flatworms for protection. Conservation status is currently 'Least Concern' according to the IUCN Red List.
