Physical Characteristics

Distinctive rounded, distended 'balloon' belly caused by a genetic deformity of the spine. Features a bright yellow to orange coloration, a fan-like dorsal fin, and a broad caudal fin.

Habitat & Distribution

A domestic aquarium variant; ancestral wild species are found in Mexico and Central America in warm fresh or brackish waters such as streams and coastal lagoons.

Size & Weight

Typically reaches 2 to 3 inches (5-8 cm) in length. Weight is minimal, usually a few grams.

Similar Looking Species

Sailfin Molly (Poecilia latipinna) and standard Molly (Poecilia sphenops), which lack the shortened, rounded body shape.

Ecological Role

Omnivorous feeder consuming algae and small invertebrates. Often captive-bred; wild variants are listed as Least Concern but provide food for larger aquatic predators.
