Platy (specifically the Orange/Gold Platy variety)
Xiphophorus maculatus
Type: Freshwater livebearer

Physical Characteristics
Deep, laterally compressed oval body with a blunt snout. This specimen shows a vibrant orange coloration typical of domestic breeds. They possess short fins, including a rounded caudal (tail) fin and a dorsal fin located on the back half of the body. Females are generally larger and rounder than males.
Habitat & Distribution
Native to Central America, ranging from Mexico to Belize. In the wild, they frequent slow-moving waters such as ditches, canals, springs, and swamps with dense vegetation and mud/silt substrates. They are highly adaptable to various water conditions.
Size & Weight
Typically reach sizes of 1.5 to 2.5 inches (4 to 6 cm) in length. They are very lightweight, usually weighing only a few grams.
Similar Looking Species
Often confused with the Southern Platyfish (Xiphophorus variatus) or the Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii). Distinguishable from swordtails by the lack of the long, sword-like extension on the lower caudal fin in males.
Ecological Role
Omnivorous opportunistic feeders that consume algae, small crustaceans, insects, and detritus. They serve as an important link in the food chain by converting botanical and microscopic matter into biomass for larger aquatic predators. Conservation status is 'Not Evaluated' by the IUCN, but they are widespread in the aquarium trade and invasive in some non-native regions.
