Grass Carp (Albino Variety)
Ctenopharyngodon idella
Type: freshwater

Physical Characteristics
This albino form is characterized by its white/pinkish body coloration and red eyes. The species typically has an elongated and slender body, a small head, and a distinctive downturned mouth with thick, fleshy lips. Its scales are relatively large. The dorsal fin is tall and located towards the middle of the back. Pectoral and pelvic fins are relatively small. The caudal fin is forked.
Habitat & Distribution
Native to eastern Asia, from the Amur River basin to southern China. It has been introduced to many countries worldwide for aquatic plant control. It inhabits large, slow-moving rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and floodplains, preferring areas with abundant aquatic vegetation. It can tolerate a wide range of water temperatures and conditions.
Size & Weight
Typically reaches 25-50 inches (60-120 cm) in length and can weigh over 50 lbs (25 kg). The largest recorded specimens have exceeded 60 inches (150 cm) and 90 lbs (41 kg).
Similar Looking Species
Other carp species like Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) or Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) have different mouth structures and body shapes. The Common Carp has barbels around its mouth and a more robust body. Silver Carp lack the downturned mouth and are filter feeders.
Ecological Role
The Grass Carp is primarily a herbivore, feeding on a wide variety of aquatic vegetation. This makes it an important biological control agent for managing excessive plant growth in waterways. In its native range, it plays a role in nutrient cycling and energy flow within freshwater ecosystems.
