Physical Characteristics

Stocky, carp-like body with a thick olive-green to dark brown skin covered in tiny scales and heavy mucus. It features rounded fins and a single small barbel at each corner of the mouth. The eyes are notably small and often orange or red in color.

Habitat & Distribution

Lives in slow-moving or still freshwater environments with heavy vegetation and muddy or silty bottoms. Native to Eurasia, commonly found in lakes, ponds, and lowland rivers. They are highly tolerant of low oxygen levels.

Size & Weight

Commonly ranges from 30 to 45 cm in length and 1 to 2 kg in weight. Large specimens can reach up to 70-80 cm and weigh over 7 kg.

Similar Looking Species

Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio), which has larger scales and longer barbels; Crucian Carp (Carassius carassius), which lacks barbels and has a more disc-like body shape.

Ecological Role

A bottom-dwelling invertivore that feeds on mollusks, insect larvae, and crustaceans. They play a role in nutrient cycling within their habitat. Conservation status is 'Least Concern' globally, though they are considered invasive in some regions outside their native range.
