Physical Characteristics
Pinkish-white to cream-colored body with red or pink eyes due to albinism. It features a robust, armored body with two rows of bony plates (scutes) along its sides. Identifiable by a short face and several pairs of sensitive barbels around the mouth used for foraging.
Habitat & Distribution
Found in slow-moving, shallow rivers, streams, and marshes across South America, particularly in the Amazon River basin. They prefer soft, sandy or muddy substrates in areas with heavy vegetation.
Size & Weight
Typically reaches a length of 2.5 to 3 inches (6.4 to 7.5 cm). They are lightweight, generally weighing only a few grams depending on maturity.
Similar Looking Species
Bronze Cory (the non-albino wild type), Albino Paleatus (Corydoras paleatus), and the White Cloud Mountain Minnow (at a distance, though body shape is vastly different). Distinguishable from other albinos by its distinctively rounded snout and body depth.
Ecological Role
Acts as a benthic scavenger, feeding on detritus, small crustaceans, and insect larvae on the riverbed. They play a key role in nutrient cycling. The Bronze Cory, of which this is a morph, is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.
