Halfbeak

Zenarchopterus dispar

Type: Estuarine/Saltwater

Halfbeak

Physical Characteristics

Elongate body with a highly distinctive extended lower jaw resembling a beak, while the upper jaw remains short and triangular. Large eyes positioned dorsally. Pectoral fins are high on the body, and the dorsal and anal fins are located far back near the tail. Typically silvery with a greenish or brownish cast and scattered dark spots or speckles along the lateral line.

Habitat & Distribution

Inhabits coastal waters, lagoons, and estuaries across the Indo-Pacific region, including Sri Lanka. Often found in brackish waters near the surface amongst mangroves or over sandy bottoms.

Size & Weight

Commonly grows to 15-20 cm in length. Maximum weight is typically less than 100 grams.

Similar Looking Species

Needlefish (both jaws are long), Garfish (elongated jaws but different fin placement), and Flying Fish (significantly larger pectoral fins).

Ecological Role

Acts as both a secondary consumer and a primary prey source for larger piscivorous birds and fish. They help regulate surface-dwelling insect and plankton populations.

Diet

Surface feeder that primarily consumes small insects that fall onto the water, as well as zooplankton and small crustaceans.

Behavior

Schooling fish that stay very close to the water surface. They are diurnal and fast swimmers, often jumping out of the water to escape predators.

Reproduction

Oviparous with internal fertilization in some species of the Zenarchopteridae family. They produce relatively few, large eggs that often have adhesive filaments to attach to vegetation.

Conservation Status

Least Concern (IUCN), though populations are sensitive to habitat loss in mangrove and estuarine ecosystems.

Identification Tips

Look for the 'half-beak' where only the bottom jaw is elongated. Observe the fish hovering just below the surface in calm lagoon waters.

Interesting Facts

The lower jaw of the halfbeak is sensitive to vibrations, helping it detect the movement of tiny prey on the water surface even in low light or murky water.
