Physical Characteristics

Body is relatively deep and compressed. It features a yellowish-bronze to silver coloration with distinctive blue spots or 'spangles' on the scales of the upper sides. The head is large with a pointed snout and the fins are yellowish. It has a continuous dorsal fin and a forked caudal fin.

Habitat & Distribution

Inhabits coral reefs, lagoons, seagrass beds, and sandy areas. Found in depths ranging from ultra-shallow waters to approximately 75 meters. Geographically distributed throughout the Indo-West Pacific, from East Africa to Japan and Australia.

Size & Weight

Commonly grows to 40-50 cm in length, with a maximum recorded length of about 87 cm. Large specimens can weigh up to 8.4 kg.

Similar Looking Species

Lethrinus atlanticus (Atlantic Emperor) which lacks the blue spotting, and Lethrinus obsoletus (Orange-striped Emperor) which has orange-yellow stripes on its lower sides.

Ecological Role

Functions as a carnivorous predator that feeds primarily on mollusks, echinoderms, and crustaceans found on the seabed. It is classified as 'Least Concern' by the IUCN, though local populations are sometimes impacted by habitat degradation.
