Physical Characteristics
Features soft, fleshy tentacles (bristles) on the snout, more prominent in males. Flattened body covered in bony plates rather than scales. Suction-cup mouth located ventrally. Typically dark brown or olive with lighter yellowish spots or mottled patterns.
Habitat & Distribution
Native to the Amazon River basin and other fast-flowing freshwater rivers in South America. Prefers well-oxygenated water with plenty of hiding spots like driftwood, rocks, and caves.
Size & Weight
Standard adult size is 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm). They are relatively light, typically weighing less than 1 pound depending on age and health.
Similar Looking Species
Common Pleco (Pterygoplichthys pardalis), which grows much larger (up to 20 inches) and lacks the distinctive facial bristles. Otocinclus catfish, which are much smaller and lack armor plating.
Ecological Role
Primary herbivore/detritivore that grazes on algae and biofilm on submerged surfaces. They play a vital role in nutrient cycling and cleaning substrate. Classified as 'Least Concern' globally, though some localized populations face habitat destruction.
