Physical Characteristics

Oval-shaped, deep body with a vibrant uniform yellow coloration across the entire body and fins. It features 13-14 dorsal spines and a small black spot often located at the upper base of the pectoral fin. The eyes are relatively large for its body size.

Habitat & Distribution

Inhabits coral-rich areas of lagoons and seaward reefs, typically at depths between 1 to 30 meters. Distributed throughout the Western Pacific, ranging from the Ryukyu Islands to Australia and the Melanesian islands.

Size & Weight

Reaches a maximum total length of approximately 9 centimeters (3.5 inches). Weight is negligible, typically under 50 grams.

Similar Looking Species

Similar to the Ambon Damselfish (Pomacentrus amboinensis), which can be distinguished by a small dark spot on the posterior base of the dorsal fin, and the Golden Damselfish (Amblyglyphidodon aureus), which lacks the black spot at the pectoral fin base and has a more elongated body.

Ecological Role

Functions as a lower-level consumer, feeding primarily on benthic algae and zooplankton. It often seeks refuge among the branches of Acropora corals. Conservation status is currently 'Least Concern' on the IUCN Red List.
