Ornate Cowfish

Aracana ornata

Type: saltwater, reef fish

Ornate Cowfish

Physical Characteristics

Distinctive box-like body encased in a rigid carapace of fused hexagonal scales. It has a rounded, swollen belly and two pairs of short, horn-like spines near the eyes and on the lower rear body. This species exhibits sexual dimorphism; males have vivid blue markings and stripes on a deeper orange body, while females feature a more intricate pattern of brown, black, and orange wavy lines.

Habitat & Distribution

Inhabits temperate coastal waters and sheltered reefs. Found throughout Southern Australia, from New South Wales to Western Australia, including Tasmania. They typically prefer sponge gardens, seagrass beds, and rocky reefs at depths ranging from 5 to 60 meters.

Size & Weight

Standard adult length is typically between 10 to 15 centimeters (4 to 6 inches), with a maximum recorded length of approximately 15 centimeters. Weight is minimal due to their small size.

Similar Looking Species

Shaw's Cowfish (Aracana aurita), which is very closely related but can be distinguished by different stripe patterns on the snout and variances in the arrangement of body spines.

Ecological Role

Functions as a benthivore, feeding on a variety of small invertebrates, including crustaceans and mollusks, by blowing jets of water into the sand to uncover prey. They are relatively slow-moving and rely on their rigid armor and potential toxins in their skin for defense. Conservation status is currently 'Not Evaluated' by the IUCN, but they are generally protected through regional Australian marine park regulations.
