Pumpkinseed Sunfish
Lepomis gibbosus
Type: freshwater

Physical Characteristics
Deep, compressed, disc-like body shape. Yellow-orange breast and belly with wavy blue/green iridescent lines on the cheek. A characteristic red or orange spot on the edge of the dark ear flap (opercle). Dense spotting across the body and fins.
Habitat & Distribution
Native to northeastern North America, preferring clear, calm, shallow water in lakes and ponds with abundant aquatic vegetation and rocky/sandy bottoms.
Size & Weight
Typically 4 to 8 inches in length; maximum record is approximately 11 inches and weights up to 1 pound 6 ounces.
Similar Looking Species
Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) lacks the red opercular spot and has a dark blotch at the base of the dorsal fin. Longear Sunfish has a longer ear flap and different patterning.
Ecological Role
Serves as an important mid-level consumer, controlling populations of snails and insects while providing a food source for larger predators like Bass and Pike.
Diet
Opportunistic feeder focusing on aquatic insects, larvae, small mollusks (snails), crustaceans, and occasionally small fish.
Behavior
Diurnal and relatively social; often found in small groups or schools. They are highly territorial during the nesting season and stay near cover like weeds or submerged logs.
Reproduction
Males construct circular nests in shallow water. Spawning occurs in late spring to summer. The male aggressively guards the eggs and fry from predators until they are free-swimming.
Conservation Status
Least Concern (IUCN). Populations are stable and widespread; they are considered invasive or non-native in parts of Europe and western North America.
Identification Tips
Look for the bright red or orange crescent-shaped spot on the posterior edge of the black ear flap and the iridescent blue wavy lines on the face.
Interesting Facts
Pumpkinseeds have specialized pharyngeal teeth (throat teeth) that allow them to crush the shells of snails and small mussels, giving them an advantage in habitats with heavy mollusk populations.
