Oranda Goldfish

Carassius auratus

Type: freshwater

Oranda Goldfish

Physical Characteristics

Features an egg-shaped body with a distinctive fleshy growth on the head known as a 'wen'. The wen typically grows over the forehead and can cover the cheeks. It possesses long, flowing double tail fins (caudal fins) and a dorsal fin. Coloration includes shades of orange, red, and white with iridescent scales.

Habitat & Distribution

A domesticated variety of goldfish living in temperate freshwater environments. While they are primarily kept in indoor aquariums or managed outdoor ponds, their wild ancestors (Prussian Carp) are found in slow-moving or stagnant waters such as rivers, lakes, and marshes across East Asia.

Size & Weight

Typically grows to 8–12 inches (20–30 cm) in length. Weight varies by diet and age but can reach up to 1-2 pounds in mature individuals living in optimal pond conditions.

Similar Looking Species

Fantail Goldfish (lacks the head wen), Lionhead Goldfish (lacks a dorsal fin but has a wen), and Ranchu Goldfish (lacks a dorsal fin and has a more curved back).

Ecological Role

Omnivorous feeder that consumes aquatic plants, insects, and small crustaceans. In captive environments, they assist in nutrient cycling. In the wild, escapees can become invasive, outcompeting native species and disturbing sediment through 'mucking' feeding behavior. Conservation status: Least Concern (Species is widespread globally).
