Physical Characteristics
Distinguished by a prominent raspberry-like fleshy growth called a 'wen' on its head. It features a deep, egg-shaped body and a long, flowing quadruple caudal (tail) fin. This specimen displays vibrant orange and white coloration with translucent fin edges.
Habitat & Distribution
A domesticated variety that does not exist in the wild. Its ancestors originated in East Asia (China). They prefer cool, slow-moving freshwater with high oxygen content and are primarily kept in indoor aquariums or managed outdoor ponds.
Size & Weight
Typically reaches 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) in length. Weight varies by age and health, but mature specimens can be quite heavy due to their deep body shape.
Similar Looking Species
Lionhead Goldfish (lacks a dorsal fin), Ranchu (lacks a dorsal fin and has a more curved back), and Fantail Goldfish (lacks the distinctive head growth or 'wen').
Ecological Role
Omnivorous scavenger; in artificial environments, they keep algae and debris in check. As a domesticated pet, they have no natural ecological role, but can become invasive if released into local waterways. Conservation status: Not Evaluated (Domesticated).
