Physical Characteristics
Genetically modified variant of the Black Tetra. Features deep, laterally compressed bodies with two distinct vertical black bars (though bars are often faint in neon variants). Characterized by bright florescent colors like 'Electric Green', 'Sunburst Orange', and 'Galactic Purple'. They possess a large anal fin and a small adipose fin.
Habitat & Distribution
The wild-type origin is South America, specifically the Paraguay and Guaporé River basins. They inhabit slow-moving, shallow, and often shaded waters. The fluorescent variants are primarily found in aquarium environments.
Size & Weight
Typically reaches 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6 cm) in length. They are lightweight, generally weighing only a few grams.
Similar Looking Species
Black Widow Tetra (wild-type), White Skirt Tetra (leucistic variety), and Serpae Tetra. Distinguishable by the intense, glowing neon coloration unique to the GloFish trademark.
Ecological Role
Omnivorous opportunistic feeders that consume small crustaceans, insects, and worms. In captivity, they are active schooling fish. The wild-type version holds a status of 'Least Concern' on the IUCN Red List, while fluorescent variants do not exist in the wild.
