Pumpkinseed Sunfish
Lepomis gibbosus
Type: freshwater

Physical Characteristics
Deep, laterally compressed oval body shape. Small mouth with the upper jaw not reaching under the eye. Coloration is olive-green on the back with sides mottled in orange, yellow, and blue. Often features bright turquoise or blue iridescent wavy lines on the cheek. A signature small black ear flap on the opercle is tipped with a distinct bright red or orange crescent.
Habitat & Distribution
Stagnant or slow-moving warm freshwater lakes, ponds, and pools of creeks or rivers. They prefer clear water with abundant submerged vegetation for cover and are native to eastern and central North America.
Size & Weight
Typically 10-20 cm (4-8 inches) in length. Maximum recorded length is around 40 cm (15 inches). Weights usually range from 0.2 to 0.5 kg (0.5 to 1 lb).
Similar Looking Species
Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) which lacks the red spot on the ear flap and wavy cheek lines; Longear Sunfish (Lepomis megalotis) which has a much longer, flexible ear flap generally lacking the red spot.
Ecological Role
Functions as both a secondary consumer and prey. They help control populations of aquatic insects and snails while serving as a vital food source for larger predatory fish like bass and pike.
Diet
Opportunistic carnivore. Feeds on aquatic insects, larvae, small mollusks (snails), crustaceans, and occasionally small fish or fish eggs.
Behavior
Active during the day (diurnal). They are social and often found in small aggregations. They prefer staying near cover like weeds or submerged logs.
Reproduction
Spawning occurs in late spring and summer. Males excavate shallow, circular nests in gravel or sandy bottoms and aggressively guard the eggs and fry after the female departs.
Conservation Status
Least Concern (IUCN). Populations are stable and they have been widely introduced outside their native range, sometimes becoming invasive.
Identification Tips
Look for the small red or orange crescent mark on the back edge of the black gill flap and the iridescent blue-green radiating lines across the cheeks.
Interesting Facts
Pumpkinseeds are known for their ability to crush snail shells using specialized pharyngeal teeth in their throats, a trait that allows them to utilize a food source many other sunfish cannot.
