Habitat & Distribution
Stagnant or slow-moving freshwater systems like swamps, ponds, and river margins in South America (Paraguay, ParanĂ¡, and Uruguay River basins). They prefer dense vegetation and leaf litter.
Size & Weight
Standard length between 1.5 to 2.5 inches (4-6 cm); weight is negligible, typically just a few grams.
Similar Looking Species
Apistogramma cacatuoides (Cockatoo Cichlid) which has more flamboyant fin crests, and Mikrogeophagus ramirezi (Ram Cichlid) which has a more rounded profile and distinct black markings.
Ecological Role
They function as secondary consumers, feeding on small invertebrates, insect larvae, and zooplankton. They are known for complex parental care and are listed as Least Concern/Not Evaluated as they are common in their native range.
