Iridescent Shark

Pangasianodon hypophthalmus

Type: Freshwater Fish

Iridescent Shark

Physical Characteristics

A member of the shark catfish family with a laterally compressed body and a shark-like dorsal fin. Juveniles feature a characteristic shimmering, iridescent glow along their sides and two dark longitudinal stripes. Adults transition to a more uniform dark gray or charcoal coloration. They possess long barbels and large eyes positioned low on the head.

Habitat & Distribution

Native to the large river basins of Southeast Asia, specifically the Mekong and Chao Phraya rivers. They inhabit deep pools in the main river channels and migrate to floodplains for spawning during the rainy season.

Size & Weight

Despite their popular trade in small aquaria, they grow exceptionally large, typically reaching 3 to 4 feet (90-130 cm) in length and weighing up to 97 lbs (44 kg) in the wild.

Similar Looking Species

Mekong Giant Catfish (Pangasianodon gigas) which lacks teeth and is significantly larger; also the Pangasius pangasius, which has a broader head and different tooth arrangement.

Ecological Role

Omnivorous in nature, feeding on crustaceans, other fish, and plant matter. They play a significant role in nutrient cycling within river systems. The species is currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to over-exploitation, habitat degradation, and dam construction blocking migration routes.
