Oyster Toadfish
Opsanus tau
Type: saltwater, benthic

Physical Characteristics
Broad, flat head with a large mouth and fleshy whiskers (cirri) around the jaw. Scaleless skin covered in thick mucus. Coloration features brownish-gray or yellowish hues with dark brown mottled bars or blotches. Possesses two dorsal fins, the first having three sharp spines.
Habitat & Distribution
Inshore shallow waters, estuaries, and bays. Lives on muddy or sandy bottoms near oyster reefs, rocks, and man-made structures from Cape Cod to Florida.
Size & Weight
Typically 10 to 12 inches long, but can reach up to 15 inches. Weight usually ranges between 1 to 2 pounds.
Similar Looking Species
The Gulf Toadfish (Opsanus beta) is very similar but differentiated by geographic location and minor differences in pectoral fin patterns. Skilletfish are smaller and have a suction disc.
Ecological Role
Important mid-level predator in estuarine ecosystems that helps control populations of small crustaceans and fishes.
Diet
Ambushes prey such as small crabs, shrimp, mollusks, and smaller fish using its powerful jaws.
Behavior
A benthic, sluggish fish that remains motionless for long periods waiting for prey. Highly territorial, especially males during spawning season. Noted for producing loud 'foghorn' or 'boat-whistle' sounds with their swim bladders.
Reproduction
Males establish nests in crevices or empty shells and produce low-frequency calls to attract females. Females lay large adhesive eggs that the male guards until they hatch.
Conservation Status
Least Concern (IUCN). Populations are considered stable across their range.
Identification Tips
Look for the very large, frog-like head, wide mouth, and dark vertical banding on the sides. They often appear to have a 'puffy' or grumpy facial expression.
Interesting Facts
They are exceptionally hardy and can survive out of water for short periods or in low-oxygen environments. NASA once sent Oyster Toadfish into space to study the effects of microgravity on the vestibular system (balance).
