Jewel Cichlid
Hemichromis bimaculatus
Type: freshwater

Physical Characteristics
The Jewel Cichlid has an oval-shaped body with pointed dorsal and anal fins. Its coloration can vary greatly depending on its origin and mood, but typically ranges from deep red to orange, adorned with iridescent blue, green, or gold spots across its body and fins. A prominent black spot is often present on the operculum (gill cover) and/or in the middle of its flank. The intensity of its colors often increases during breeding.
Habitat & Distribution
This is a freshwater species native to West and Central Africa. They are found in rivers, streams, lakes, and lagoons, often inhabiting areas with dense vegetation, rocky crevices, or submerged roots that provide ample hiding places. They can tolerate a range of water conditions but prefer slightly acidic to neutral water.
Size & Weight
Typically, Jewel Cichlids grow to about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) in length. Some larger specimens have been observed reaching up to 8 inches (20 cm) in optimal conditions. Their weight is generally proportional to their length, remaining relatively light given their compact size.
Similar Looking Species
There are several species within the Hemichromis genus that are often referred to as 'Jewel Cichlids,' and they can be difficult to distinguish without careful observation. Hemichromis guttatus (Red Jewel Cichlid) is very similar, often having a more intense red coloration and sometimes lacking the distinct lateral spots of H. bimaculatus. Other Hemichromis species like H. lifalili or H. frempongi also share similar body shapes and iridescent spotting but may differ in color intensity, spot arrangement, or overall size.
Ecological Role
Jewel Cichlids are opportunistic omnivores, feeding on a variety of small invertebrates, insects, plant matter, and detritus in their natural habitat. They can be territorial, especially during breeding, and play a role in their ecosystem by consuming diverse food sources and acting as prey for larger aquatic or amphibious predators. They are known for their parental care, guarding their eggs and fry.
