Physical characteristics

Elongated, torpedo-shaped body with a distinct, striking marbled or vermiculated pattern across the head, body, and fins, lacking the typical red spots of brown trout; coloration ranges from greenish-grey to yellowish-brown.

Habitat & distribution

Endemic to the northern Adriatic basin, specifically cold, clear, oxygen-rich alpine and sub-alpine rivers and lakes of the Soca (Isonzo) river system in Slovenia and northern Italy.

Behavior

Solitary and territorial as adults, preferring deep pools and hiding under boulders or undercut river banks; mostly active during dawn and dusk (crepuscular).

Diet

Mainly carnivorous, feeding on aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, and smaller fish, transitioning to a predominantly piscivorous diet as it grows larger.

Reproduction

Spawns in late autumn and winter (November to January) over gravel beds in fast-flowing river riffles, where females construct redds to bury their eggs.

Ecological role

Acts as an apex aquatic predator in its native river ecosystems, helping to regulate populations of smaller fish and maintaining aquatic biodiversity.

Similar species

Brown Trout (Salmo trutta), which features prominent red or black spots surrounded by light halos, unlike the continuous marble-like pattern of the marble trout.

Identification tips

Look for the lack of red spots and the presence of intricate, wavy, greenish-brown marble patterns covering the entire body and dorsal fin.

Interesting facts

The marble trout can grow to be the largest trout species in Europe within its native range and is uniquely adapted to withstand the fierce, cold currents of fast alpine rivers.
