Atlantic Wolffish

Physical Characteristics

The Atlantic Wolffish has a long, eel-like body with a large head and powerful jaws. Its skin is thick and scaleless, typically gray, greenish-brown, or purplish-brown. They possess prominent canine teeth at the front of their jaws and molar-like teeth further back, adapted for crushing hard-shelled prey. They have a single, long dorsal fin running almost the entire length of their back, and relatively small pectoral fins. Their eyes are prominent.

Habitat & Distribution

Atlantic Wolffish are cold-water, bottom-dwelling fish found in the North Atlantic Ocean. They inhabit depths ranging from shallow coastal waters (around 20 meters) down to over 600 meters. They prefer rocky or sandy bottoms, often seeking shelter in crevices, small caves, or among boulders.

Size & Weight

Typical size ranges from 60 to 120 cm (2 to 4 feet) in length, with some individuals reaching up to 150 cm (5 feet). Average weight is around 10 to 20 kg (22 to 44 pounds), with a maximum recorded weight of over 23 kg (50 pounds).

Similar Looking Species

Other wolffish species, such as the Northern Wolffish (Anarhichas denticulatus) and Spotted Wolffish (Anarhichas minor), are similar in general body shape and dentition. Distinguishing features can include coloration patterns (e.g., spots on the Spotted Wolffish), fin shapes, and specific tooth arrangements. The Atlantic Wolffish tends to have a more uniform body coloration compared to the Spotted Wolffish.

Ecological Role

As a benthic predator, the Atlantic Wolffish plays a crucial role in controlling populations of bottom-dwelling invertebrates, particularly sea urchins, crabs, and mollusks. This helps maintain the health and balance of their rocky and sandy bottom habitats. Its conservation status is generally considered 'Endangered' by the IUCN across much of its range due to habitat degradation, bycatch in fishing operations, and climate change impacts.
